Christian Sternhagen applies the ideas of French ethnologist Claude Lévi-Strauss, who coined the term "wild thinking", to architecture by exploring the tension between art and science, rationality and intuition, theory and practice. In the idea of "das wilde Bauen" (wild building), he sees great potential in the (re)organisation of seemingly different positions in order to develop innovative approaches in architecture. In his master's thesis, he explores "the aesthetics of the processual and the effects of expanding and redefining the concepts of resources and tools“. Christians' current project, focuses on the vacant Galeria Kaufhof building in the centre of Hanover. My photographs illustrate this way of thinking, capturing the connection between past and present, as well as the improvisational creativity that lies in bricolage. 

For three weeks, leftover materials from the old department stores' will be used to plan, test and build in an open workshop under supervision. Accompanied by lectures and events at the weekend and a photography exhibition, which shows current pictures from the empty
floors of the Kaufhof.

The typologies of temporary promises examine processes of perception and communication - how we see what we see, what we do with what we see, how we name what we think we have seen. Stairs, bridges or platforms - they serve people for a limited time, but are far removed from conventional buildings or design objects and yet the objects are characterized by their peculiarity and novelty. They all combine a certain aesthetic of the temporary and the practical. Their construction often requires no special craftsmanship, but they fulfill their purpose in a remarkably simple way.

The images raise questions about the transience of the human condition and the resilience of nature, while at the same time conveying a sense of admiration for the simplicity and efficiency of such constructions.

"The photographs show a subjective examination of the architecture. They examine the building, scrutinise the location and are to be understood as a homage to the building. Although the signs of the times are recognised, other aspects are neglected: after the construction of the third station building in 1979, there was mocking talk of a "department store with a railway connection". The building complex is a key part of the Altona shopping paradise. The railway station extends Ottenser Hauptstraße and, with its spacious areas, expands the offerings of the nearby Mercado. The perception of this exuberant permanent consumption puts a mask on the station and lets the sculptural-looking building down. By concentrating on a few sections of the overall ensemble, the images convey a matter-of-fact depiction of a long-gone architectural style. The work on display thematises the photographic accompaniment of an analytical process and at the same time raises questions about the half-life of buildings."
